The Uniting Church in Garden Lane Chester (Methodist and United Reformed) extended an open invitation to members of the local and wider community to a coffee morning in the church on Saturday 5th January 2013.  The event was to celebrate the achievement in the Garden Quarter in supporting coffee mornings organised by the uniting church throughout 2012.

A staggering total of £2,008 was raised for a number of local charities at the coffee mornings held on each first Saturday of the month.  Thanking all those present for their ongoing support, the Minister the Reverend Martin Hardy also made especial reference to the refurbished kitchen facilities at the church which had recently been awarded a five star rating by Cheshire West & Chester Council on behalf of the Food Standards Agency.

Councillor Bob Rudd in recognising the valuable role of the church in providing a much needed community meeting place, felt that it was a really worthwhile community project worthy of a grant of £2,000 from his annual Member's Budget introduced to improve the quality of life and well-being in local communities.  Other funding for the project came from the accounts of both the Garden Lane Methodist Church and the former Sealand Road United Reformed Church as well as from individual donors.

Peter Linsey, one of the church members, took the opportunity to present to the church a Certificate of Thanks from the Cheshire West & Chester Borough Fairtrade Steering group for the church's continuing help and support which had enabled the Borough to obtain renewal of its status as a 'Fairtrade Borough.'  Peter had received this on behalf of the church from Chester's Lord Mayor at a celebration before Christmas.
